Growth: 1975-Present
In the late 1970s, VUMC’s facilities were becoming obsolete, requiring larger and more specialized spaces for growing patient populations, advanced research projects, and new and expanded clinical and academic departments.
New buildings on or near campus have included Light Hall, Frist Hall, the new VUH and its additions, new psychiatric, rehabilitation, and children’s hospitals, as well as the Vanderbilt Clinic and several medical research buildings. In 2008, Vanderbilt Health opened the first satellite clinic at 100 Oaks Mall. Since then, VUMC has opened many clinics throughout Middle Tennessee and expanded its network to regional hospitals.
In 2016, VUMC legally separated from VU, easing clinical
growth but maintaining necessary connections with academic programs.
