In “Keeping Still,” the speaker and her husband attend a joint appointment with their acupuncturist, who treats “what ailments [they decide] need tuning.” This acupuncture set, from early 20th century Japan, was donated to Vanderbilt by Nashville doctor Bernard M. Weinstein in the 1960s. He wrote that acupuncture is based on the “irritation-counterirritation principle.”
