“Red Rose” Needlepoint Kit

Dinah Shore
c. 1970
Dinah Shore Collection

Red roses appear in several poems in Blood Wolf Moon: a gift from the uncle to the mother at the Paris airport; pressed in the mother’s book after she returns to New York, alone; and “alive with thorns” and flung “across the endless stage” in “Poison Tree.” This red rose was created by Dinah Shore, another successful female performer, who hosted several variety shows from the 1940s through the 1970s. She created needlepoint kits like this one for her final show, “Dinah’s Place.”
