“Girl eats”

Susan Key slowly eats her main meal for the day at Crawford School in Overton County, Tennessee. At the time of the photograph, the school had just initiated its first hot lunch program. Corn remarks, “Some of the little girls only ate half the food. The teacher said their stomachs had shrunk because they had been eating so little…Each child had a small bottle of milk, but for those who needed water, there was a bucket of water and a community dipper at the end of the table.”
