In 1961, one of the first hot lunch programs in Tennessee was started at Crawford School in Overton County with the help of local businesses, Federal Food Commodities, and area churches. Corn recalls, “It was cornbread and beans and other country staples, but it was hot and cooked with loving care. One of the teachers told us that this was the only full meal many of the children would have all day. ”
