The premier issue of the Vanderbilt Austral was a definition of student thought and discourse in the early beginnings of the University. The Austral intended immediately to distinguish itself here as a news source, for students, by students. From the jump, the student editors tackled a myriad of issues from unaffordable housing to religious education. Since the word Austral means “southern”, it is not surprising how intentional these early Vanderbilt journalists were in allying themselves with other college papers in the southern United States.
