Gabriel Naudé’s treatise, The History of Magick, was a defense of famous doctors and scientists against the charge of witchcraft and sorcery. His argument divides magic into three categories – divine, theurgic, natural, and witchcraft – of which only witchcraft is deemed to be unlawful.
