Matanzas, a city east of Havana, was settled as a colonial center for sugar plantations and served as a principal port for slave trafficking from Africa. it became a cultural center for the arts, known as the “Athens of Cuba” for its many poets. Here, Ediciones Vigía began in a house on Watchtower Square, or Plaza de la Vigía.
