Uncle Fred – Frederick Altamont Cornwallis Twistleton, 5th Earl of Ickenham – first appears in a 1935 short story by Wodehouse called “Uncle Fred Flits By.”  The fifth novel in the Blandings Castle series, Uncle Fred in the Springtime is the first full length novel to include the character.  The novel is significant for its reliance on dialogue to advance the story, comprising nearly 67% of the total text of the book.  After Wodehouse’s work in theatre in the late 1910s, the volume of dialogue present in his novels increased heavily over time.
